Is it illegal to have unlocked cellphones?For example I have TMobile, and Tmobile doesn't carry the iPhone.
If I wanted an iPhone I'd have to either switch companies or get an unlocked one.

You can purchase this phone through Amazon.com as well, unlocked. While all you have to do to make calls with an unlocked phone is put in the Cingular SIM, an unlocked phone will not let you access the web out of the box. You will first have to program it for the correct addresses to communicate with Cingular's GPRS servers.

Try ebay but shop wisely. Or just but a phone thast not unlocked and get an unlocking chip.

Well many phone retailers will view the unlocking of a phone as a major offence so many shops don't want to risk it in case they have a lawsuit on their hands. Unlocking is a difficult process to start off with and many require third parties to be able to create software to allow them to be unlock, providers lock them to a certain service provider because that provider is the one paying a certain amount to have that phone under their belt. Consider the Iphone as one major one, unlocking of it has been a process that has been done by third parties and requires a long process, Apple has became aware of this happening and has been attempting to crack down on it and it's causing the distributors to lose money as their service is being by by passed and therefore other service providers are gaining money. Selling them unlocked is a major problem and that's why it's not done often by retailers.

Yes you can, at least to make calls. If you don't have a data plan you won't be able to go online though.

Someone already asked a similar question. Here's the answer i gave him:
"Unlocked" means that the phone is open to all service providers. It can be used with any sim card.
"Locked" means its only for one service provider. For example the iPhone, it's locked to cingular only and if you unlock it, it can be used with t-mobile and other service providers.
"Unlocked-Cingular" means that it's unlocked, but branded with the cingular name. You can still any SIM card with that though. Hope that helped, if you have anymore questions feel free to ask.
So no it doesn't matter if the phone is unlocked or locked. If you had a choice i would go with the unlocked one. You get a higher price for unlocked phones if you want to resell, Good luck!

A locked cell phone is "locked" down to a single cellular provider. An unlocked one however can be transferred from one company to another usually, providing that the new carrier uses a service (
CDMA, GSM, etc.) that is compatible with the phone.

nope, when I moved to germany I called AT&T to get the unlock code & they gave it to me with no problems, so its obviously not illegal to have unloced phones if they give u the code upon request…if u buy the phone…its yours
